After a weekend of deluge rain, the Crusaders and the Eagles were able to play in the cool evening on Sunday afternoon at Kirsch Rooney. This game would determine who would play Rummel for third place in district. Rummel had won an earlier coin flip to get the bye. Shaw had won an earlier coin flip to get the home team advantage.
In the top of the 1st, Richard Duncan led off with a double. BJ Rodrigue hit a single that scored Richard. Chris McIntyre and Matt Adams walked, but the Crusaders were unable to score again. In the bottom of the inning, Brad Treuting took the mound for the Crusaders. The Eagles scored 3 runs on 3 hits. In the top of the 2nd, Stephen Landry reached on an error. Ryan Hebert doubled moving Stephen to third. Richard Duncan hit a ground ball on the right side of the infield and was thrown out at first, but scored Stephen from third. BJ Rodrigue then hit a double which scored Ryan. Then the Eagles switched pitchers. In the bottom of the 2nd, the first batter flew out to Josh Radovich in right. Brad Treuting struck out the next batter, and then the third batter was put out on a Stephen Landry to Chris McIntyre play.
In the top of the third, Chris McIntyre led off with a homerun! Brad Treuting singled, and then Josh Radovich laid down a nice sacrifice bunt. However, the Crusaders were unable to score. In the bottom of the inning, the first Shaw batter struck out. The second batter reached second on an error. The next batter walked. The next batter was put out on a BJ Rodrigue to Chris McIntyre play, followed by the next batter being thrown out on a play from Stephen Landry to Chris. In the top of the fourth, BJ Rodrigue led off with a double, his third hit on the night. He then stole second on a wild pitch. Matt Adams followed with a single that scored BJ. Matt Thorne followed with a double, putting Austin Condon, who was pinch running for Matt Adams, on third. The Crusaders were unable to score any more runs in this inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Eagles scored 2 runs on 3 hits, tying the score at 5 apiece.
In the fifth, the Crusaders were unable to score, but the Eagles managed to score 1 run on 2 hits, bringing the score to 6 -5 in favor of Shaw. In the top of the sixth, the Crusaders managed to do what they have been doing all season and that is rally back and never give up. Richard Duncan led off with a single, his second hit of the night. Matt Adams followed with a single, his second of the evening. Matt Thorne then followed with a 3 run homerun putting the Crusaders up 8 - 6! Chris McIntyre followed the homerun with a single, his second hit on the evening. The Eagles then had a pitching change. Chris was able to steal second on a wild pitch, but the Crusaders were unable to score any more runs. In the bottom of the inning, the Eagles led off with two singles. This time, the Crusaders made the pitching change. BJ Rodrigue came in to close, for the third time in as many games. He struck out the first two batters, walked the third, and then struck out the fourth for the third out. The Eagles were held without scoring.
In the top of the seventh, the Crusaders were unable to increase their lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Eagles' first batter hit a high infield fly that landed for a hit. The second batter hit a rocket to Stephen Landry at shortstop. Stephen managed to get his glove on the ball in the air, the ball bounced up and he caught it on the way down. Awesome play and concentration. The next batter also ripped another to Stephen at short. This time, Stephen caught the ball just above the ground and then caught the guy on first with too much of a lead to return -- once again, a double play for the Crusaders. The Crusaders win this one by a score of 8 - 6. Great job team!! Good luck in the next one!
